Tax incentives, metro locales fit indie film ‘Joneses’
By RODNEY HO, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Friday, November 21, 2008
The $8 million indie film “The Joneses” starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore was scheduled to wrap a 27-day shoot Thursday.
Earlier this week, Mojo stopped by the Alpharetta gated community where most of the action takes place.

JASON GETZ/jgetz@ajc.com
Actor David Duchovny (right) talks with writer/director Derrick Borte Monday on the set of the film ‘The Joneses’ in an Alpharetta subdivision.
“The Joneses” features a seemingly happy suburban family that moves into a neighborhood. But they’re hired guns from a marketing firm that is using them to evangelize about products and provide marketing research. Duchovny plays the husband who is conflicted by the entire operation.
Duchovny, in a green jogging suit, was shooting a scene in which a character played by Lauren Hutton stops him, asks him into a limousine and tries to entice him to take a promotion. It was an especially chilly morning, and during breaks Duchvony jumped up and down and paced to stay warm.
The “Californication” star, who recently had split from his wife, Tea Leoni, and entered a facility for sex addiction, wasn’t allowed to talk to the media. (In fact, when Mojo and a publicist even got near him, a security guard shooed us away.)
But producer Andy Spaulding was happy to talk about the film. Recent enhancements in Georgia’s tax incentive laws drew Echo Lake Productions to the metro area, which has plenty of suburban subdivisions that fit the mold that the film was seeking.
He also liked the fact that the city has experienced film crew (more than 80 percent was locally hired) and plenty of quality area actors to fill in secondary roles. He even placed a couple of “Real Housewives of Atlanta” prominently into a party scene as extras.
Kristi Zea, “The Joneses” production designer and a producer, has an illustrious list of credits including “Goodfellas,” “The Departed” and “Philadelphia.” She spent several weeks with local location manager Michael Riley finding the proper home for the Jones family to live in.
She vetted dozens of homes and with the real estate market cratering, there were plenty of empty ones to choose from. But she needed a house with loftlike spaces, and they were few and far between. In the end, she picked a home that was occupied. This meant the production company had to pay the family to rent a nearby home for a month so “The Joneses” could take over.
“We wanted something upscale but not over the top,” Zea said.
Inside, most of the furniture is covered in white tarp to keep off dirt from scampering production crews. A huge black-and-white photo of the fake Jones family (which also includes rising star Amber Heard) is featured by the dining room. Oversized carnival photo-booth-style photos of each family member are featured up the stairwell.
Among the other locales “The Joneses” used: Kell High School in Marietta, Alpharetta’s Muse hair salon, Pampas Steakhouse and Atlanta National Golf Club.
The film won’t be released until fall 2009 at the earliest, Spaulding said.

Brockville native hits big screen with Demi, David
Posted By Kim Lunman, Staff Writer, Posted 16 hours ago
Brockville native Ben Hollingsworth has officially gone Hollywood. The actor is to appear on the big screen in a new movie called The Jones, with stars Demi Moore and David Duchovny.
"It's been quite a ride," said the 24-year-old in a recent interview from Toronto.
Hollingsworth plays the son of the two Hollywood actors in the movie that just wrapped filming outside Atlanta, Georgia, and is to premiere next year.
"It's been a bit of a whirlwind," he said.
Moore had to have the final casting approval for Hollingsworth, who won the role over 200 other hopefuls. He admitted he was nervous when he first met the actress.
"You don't want to screw it up," said Hollingsworth. When he got the part, he said he then had to worry about getting a visa to work in the U.S.
"It was extremely excruciating waiting out the results," he said. "It was kind of panic time."
Hollingsworth was born in Brockville but his family moved to Peterborough when he was 12 years old. His parents are Brian and Pat Hollingsworth.
The actor, who had several film and television roles before landing his big break in The Jones alongside big box office names said he still has ties to Brockville. His grandfather Wally Hollingsworth, who used to own a bakery, lives here and his family has a cottage at Charleston Lake where he returns every summer.
The Jones is a dark comedy about consumerism. Moore and Duchovny play Steve and Kate Jones, a seemingly perfect couple with two teenaged children Jenn and Mick in a posh suburb. Actress Amber Heard plays the role of Jenn.
Playing Moore's son in the movie was "amazing," said Hollingsworth.
"She's a terrific woman," he said. "She's wonderful to work with. She's very smart and intelligent about how she approaches the scene."
He got to know Moore socially, attending her 46th birthday party with other crew members and her husband Ashton Kutcher.
"We had some great chances to hang out," he said. "She took me to an Atlanta Falcons NFL game."
Meanwhile, he said Duchovny was a prankster on the set.
"It's part of the way David keeps spirits light on the set," he said. "We had a fart machine on the set. No matter how old you are, a fart machine is hard to resist laughing at.
"He's such a funny guy. I feel I was blessed to work with two people who are so successful, so talented at what they do. I tried to soak it up like a sponge. Both Demi and David are amazing actors."
He said the movie's message is timely.
"We're in a social climate that's perfect for this story. We're in a global panic. We live in a consumer society obsessed with marketing and labels and keeping up with the Jones."
Hollingsworth real-life mother, Pat, said the family is thrilled for her son's success.
"The reality of it is just huge for him," she said in an interview from Peterborough. "He's very passionate about his work."
Hollingsworth said he caught the acting bug at age 14. He appeared in more than 20 different professional and regional theatre productions in high school. At 17, he played the leading role in Frozen Dreams as a mentally delayed youth living on the streets of Toronto. The play paved Hollingsworth's way to being accepted into National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal.
Hollingsworth will return home to spend time with his family for Christmas and plans to spend several months in Hollywood in the New Year looking for his next role.
He already has a host of screen credits to his name. He has guest starred on CTV's Degrassi, the Next Generation as well as TBS's new comedy Lovebites and appears in the HBO series The Line. In September 2007, he was a guest star on CBC-TV series Heartland.
Hollingsworth grew up in Tincap and attended the then-Lyn Tincap elementary school before he left the area when he was in Grade 7. He played baseball and hockey here and loved going to Riverfest every year, he said.
"I thank Brockville for a lot of who I am today," he said. "I have many fond memories of Brockville."

If ever there was a film perfectly attuned to the currentzeitgeist, it would be The Joneses. First-time writer-director Derrick Borte imbues a serious core theme – the wobbly undercurrents of a frenetic consumer culture – with humour, warmth and shots of clever, zesty fun.
Borte begins the film by showing us ourselves – or at least who we often aspire to be. We meet Steve Jones (David Duchovny), his wife, Kate (Demi Moore), and their children Jenn (Amber Heard) and Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) as they move into their monster home in an affluent suburb of a city somewhere in America. Friendly, confident and very good-looking, they are also loaded with the coolest, newest stuff.
The Joneses are much more than just the new neighbours. Within days, all four family members have insinuated their way into the community. Their most dedicated fans are their next-door neighbours Larry (Gary Cole) and Summer (Glenne Headly), a couple devoted to each other yet prone to keeping secrets as well. Despite the Joneses' success integrating into the community, soon the fissures in their family begin to spew. But it's not until an outright catastrophe occurs next door that they are forced to make choices about their priorities.
Duchovny is compelling as a man who doesn't really know who he is until it's almost too late, and Moore gives one of her best performances as a woman who uses her job as a shield against real emotional involvement. Cole and Headly are particularly affecting as a couple who have wholly committed themselves to the principles of the American dream but are ultimately betrayed by their own ideals.
Borte convincingly makes the case that as a society we have an almost unquenchable thirst to shop for the latest and the biggest everything, and he demonstrates how our possessions fill up the emotional hole where our self-worth should be. Given the events of the last year, there's no doubt that we need to figure out who we want to be, not what we want to buy.

Danke euch für die tollen Bilder
. Ich weiß nur nicht ob ich ihn bis jetzt richtig glücklich einschätzen soll, es sieht mehr nach einem grinsen, als nach einem fröhlichen Lachen aus, was so seine Mimik verrät.
